Thoughts by Dr. Essam Hassan
Part One: Continuing from yesterday's post... titled:
The Vestibular System - "The Child's Compass"
Title: Is your child hyperactive and restless? The problem might be in their inner ear!
Content:
The vestibular system is responsible for balance and determining the position of the head relative to the ground. It is the "commander" that tells the brain when to move and how to stop.
If there is a malfunction: The child may exhibit excessive movement (seeking stimulation) or be very afraid of swings (sensitive to movement).
Impact: Without sensory balance, the child will not be able to sit quietly in a chair to learn.
Dr. Essam's advice to families at home, along with sensory neurological rehabilitation:
Swings, structured rotations, and jumping are not just play; they are "food" for the vestibular system, enabling the child to focus later.
And in the post:
Here is an illustrative image of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) results showing areas of neural activity associated with the vestibular system in the brain, which forms the basis of our sensory-neurorehabilitation.
May God heal our children.
